The standards our curators use to grade items, and what sellers must follow when writing item descriptions. If you're a buyer, this also helps you understand the condition terms used in each listing.
For artwork, the authenticity of the signature or certificate and the condition of the canvas are what matter most.
Canvas or medium undamaged, colours still sharp, with a certificate of authenticity (COA) from the artist or gallery where available.
Light signs of age (slight yellowing of the varnish) but no structural damage.
Visible damage (a small tear, flaking paint) — this MUST be photographed in detail and explained before sale.
